Lewes is a town whose name can be traced back to an Anglo-Saxon charter from 961 AD where it was spelt as Læwe. The spelling evolved to Lewes by the time of the Domesday Book of 1086. Anglo-Norman scribes may have influenced the addition of the “-s” suffix to the end of Anglo-Saxon place names, a practice that can be observed in the French name for London (Londres). The traditional theory is that Læwe derives from the Old English word hlæw, meaning “hill” or “barrow”, which may have referred to School Hill or one of the ancient burial mounds in the area. However, this theory has been challenged by linguist Rune Forsberg, who suggests that Læwe actually comes from lǣw, an Old English word for “wound” or “incision”, because Lewes overlooks the narrow, steep-sided gash where the River Ouse cuts through the line of the South Downs. Another theory by Richard Coates is that Læwe may have derived from lexowia, an Old English word meaning “hillside” or “slope”, which was borrowed from Old Welsh.
